Genoa is located in northern Italy, between the sea and the Apennines. His is one of the main Italian ports.

Maritime center as early as the fifth century AD, Genoa had intense relations with the Greek, Etruscan and Punic world. It was for a long time under the Byzantine rule and later under the Longobard one, but its great expansion began after the year 1000, when it became a powerful maritime republic and extended its mercantile and military dominion over a large part of the Mediterranean.

With Andrea Doria, doge in 1528 and belonging to a family of wealthy merchants and extraordinary navigators, financiers of the Spanish empire of Charles V, the Republic of Genoa reached the height of its power. Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries a public noble residential project was started in Genoa for the construction of a system of new streets and representative buildings, in which the authorities and the most noble families of the city settled. The environmental scenario of departure was difficult because the center of Genoa was densely populated and limited by the conformation of the urban territory between the sea and the mountains, so the new buildings were articulated on several levels, with loggias, courtyards and the tendency to a vertical architectural development. This redevelopment intervention of the heart of Genoa was started through a public regulation that established special magistrates, established the lots and followed the assignments to the more wealthy families.

Thus the Palazzi dei Rolli were built along the New Roads, from the name of the lists or official registers in which the noble residences were registered, the result of careful administrative management in which private interests joined the public ones, giving life to an original model that It was an example for the whole of Europe: the families who lived there, in fact, had the honor and the commitment to welcome state visits and illustrious travelers, such as princes, ambassadors, prelates, and to participate thus with the pomp of their own dwells in the consolidation of the image and the diplomatic role of the city.

The Palazzi dei Rolli, some Renaissance and other Baroque, are united by some characteristics, such as the spectacular steps at the entrance, courtyards and loggias on the gardens, the interiors decorated with stuccos and frescoes. All possess a high architectural and artistic value and reach a universal value as they adapt to the particular characteristics of the site and the needs of a specific social and economic organization, such as that of the Republic of Genoa.
